Instrumentation Basics and Why Accuracy Matters

Tuesday, 18 June 2013 11:32 by Admin

With today's performance tuners and racers dialing-in their engines right to the edge of destruction, monitoring engine vitals is more important than ever before. That's where choosing the right gauge for your application can make the difference between launching an engine, or launching a successful career in the performance world.

Creating the wish-list is often the easy part. Run down the list of available products and be creative, thinking of every possible metric to measure. That works great until budgets and reality come around, then suddenly the gauge train runs right off the tracks.

On the other hand, too often it's tight budgets and a lack of basic knowledge of instrumentation and gauges that leave drivers guessing at engine vitals until it's too late. Fortunately, there's a good budget-minded strategy that can help shops and end-users transition from the basics of instrumentation to the full-out telemetric dream team.

According to Kris Carlson, North American sales manager for STACK, a U.K.-based manufacturer of in-car gauges and data logging systems, starting with a baseline system that can be built up over time is a good strategy when adding instrumentation to a track car on a limited budget.

"You can really run the extremes with instrumentation. ALMS and F1 teams might spend upwards of $30,000 per-car on instrumentation that covers everything from engine to chassis complete with synchronized video and tire monitors," Carlson said. "But not everybody's in that world, so you need to focus on what's most important to protect More...
